Telamon Corporation and Johnson Melloh Solutions, two Indianapolis-based companies focused on financing, designing, constructing, and operating renewable energy facilities, and the Indianapolis Airport Authority are launching the “2013 Energy Independence Challenge” sponsored by General Energy Solutions Inc. (GES). This new competition will be open to Indiana high school students, grades 9 through 12, to encourage innovation in energy conservation.
“This exciting new program will bring together students, teachers and faculty advisors to generate ideas for change and, ultimately, improve the quality of schools throughout the state,” said Eric Tate, Executive Vice President of Telamon Energy Solutions. “It provides an ideal opportunity to address specific challenges and plans for improvement.”
As part of the competition, entrant teams of 2-4 students will be asked to submit a plan or proposal for how their school can be more efficient in its use of energy — the core to becoming more energy independent. Younger students can take part if accompanied by students from grades 9-12. Overseen by a school faculty member, staff advisor or sponsor, each team will be required to submit a detailed essay that explains their proposed change and recommended plan of action. Tables, charts, references and other supplemental materials will be expected to explain the research and analysis that were completed.
“There is no limit to the types of recommendations these students can submit, as energy is underlying in almost everything,” says Travis Murphy, Director of Marketing, Johnson Melloh Solutions. “They may address issues ranging from recycling, how best to transport students to school or even the incorporation of renewable energy. There are just an infinite number of ways our school systems can be more energy conscious.”
“GES is proud to be a presenting sponsor of the Energy Independence Challenge. We look forward to helping students build a brighter, greener future for their schools and local communities,” said Jack Chen, Managing Director of General Energy Solutions USA.
An Energy Independence Management Team will serve as judges for the competition. Winners will be announced in June. The school of the winning team will be awarded $15,000 in order to implement the proposed plan. The team will also be recognized at the 2013 Commissioning Event for the 15 megawatt solar power installation. The winning submission will be featured at the Indianapolis International Airport in conjunction with the solar display. The team members of the four first place grade level winners will also be awarded with an Off-Grid Solar Backpack.
